Virtual Halloween Party: Learning can’t get much more fun!

When: Friday, October 24, 2008
Time: 8:00 - Midnight (PDT)
Where: SJSU SLIS Second Life Campus

This is a great opportunity to have FUN learning about Second Life. If you’ve heard about Second Life, spent time there or not, have an avatar or not, this is a low stakes opportunity to get a sense of the virtual world imagined and created by it’s users.

The host, San Jose State’s Jeremy Kemp, is a very active and enthusiastic Second Life educator. I’m sure he’s designed a great event.

For more on the SJSU gala, here’s the infomercial.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Second Life requires viewer software and a broadband Internet connection. The software and accounts are free.

View the 7 min. video “Entering Second Life in Four Easy Steps” http://tinyurl.com/slissl2 which gets you into Second Life and onto the San Jose State Island.

HOW TO GET HELP -
The hosts are offering two support options:

Attend a web conference on Teaching and Learning Online

This opportunity just came across my desk: A web-conference on Teaching and Learning Online, Oct 7-8.
If you’re moving towards complete online courses then this looks like a great professional development opportunity.

pICT will sponsor 7 faculty members to attend. If you’re interested here’s what you do.

  1. Look over the program and the dates and decide whether you have the time and desire to attend and be actively involved. We’d expect that you’d attend a fair amount, and use the asynchronous discussions, etc as well. No quiz, although we’d like whoever attends to get the most out of it and also be willing to share what s/he learns in any of the informal ways we exchange ideas.
  2. If your game and able, select 3 books. These are shipped to us, for you.
  3. Then email me with your intent to participate, along with your book choices.

Announcing Professional Learning Communities

In collaboration with the Library, ITS and the College of Education, we’ve created a new opportunity for you to exchange ideas and learn from one another. PLCs are voluntary, monthly gatherings of 8-12 members focused on course design topics the PLC defines. They’re open to all faculty, administrators and staff redesigning courses to improve student learning. See the attached invitation for details.

If you’re interested here’s what’s next:

By September 5th, reply by to this email with your general availability. It’s enough to say something like: “I’m available Mon, Wed Fri, 2-5pm; Tues and Fri 8-3pm.

Then wait. . .

  1. I’ll put the group(s) together based on your availability and contact you.
  2. At that time, you’ll also receive a very short questionnaire asking about what topics you’d like to cover. (If you wish, you may include them in the reply to this mail.)
  3. From there, the facilitators will schedule your first meeting, at which time you all will discuss and set your PLC topics and “agenda.”

Facilitators are Mark Laumakis, Faculty/Faculty in Residence ITS, Carolyn Baber, Library Faculty; Pam Jackson, Library Faculty; Keven Jeffery, Library Faculty; Andrea Saltzman, Faculty Consultant.

Note: While being a member of a PLC is voluntary, we ask that members commit to monthly meetings. Also, PLCs are in addition to our Friday OverLunches and CTL/ITS Luncheon series on various topics.

Please feel free to contact Suzanne at 4-2953 or pict at rohan.sdsu.edu
